Our Philosophy: AI as the Lantern, Not the Storyteller

Welcome to the Bardkeeper blog. Before we talk about features or roadmaps, we want to start with what we believe.

The table is sacred

A great tabletop session is alchemy. The DM improvises a haunting side quest from a single offhand question. A player's character makes a choice that changes the campaign's direction forever. There's laughter at a critical fumble, and a hush when a beloved NPC dies.

None of that comes from a model. None of it can.

We don't believe AI belongs at the table as a player, a DM, or a co-author. The moment a machine starts making creative choices, the magic dims. The story stops being yours.

So what is AI for?

We think AI has a narrow role in tabletop play: it holds the lantern so you can see the story you're already telling.

Think about what pulls you out of a session. Frantic note-taking while your players wait. The mid-week panic of "what happened last time?"

That's the friction Bardkeeper exists to remove. We capture the words you and your players already say, and surface them back to you when you need them. We don't write the story. We help you remember it.

The pledge

Every decision we make about this product flows from one principle:

AI should make you a better roleplayer. It shouldn't replace you.

That means our recaps describe what happened; they don't suggest what should happen next. We surface the NPC names, locations, and plot threads you introduced, and we never invent them. Your transcripts stay your transcripts, and your campaign stays your campaign. The best entity description is the one you wrote; we just help you find it at the right moment. And if a feature would let a machine make a creative choice that should be a human's, we won't build it.

What this blog will be

We'll use this space for product updates: what we're building and why. We'll also pull back the curtain on how the product works behind the scenes. We want to spotlight your campaigns and your wins, and when we say no to a feature, we'll try to explain why.

We'd love to hear from you. Drop into our community Discord and tell us what you think AI should, and shouldn't, do at your table.

May your dice roll true,

The Bardkeeper Team
